Puget Sound Business Journal Mentions NEW Visionworks Location

Visionworks opens in Renton to support Boeing employees

April 1st, 2016

San Antonio-based Visionworks opened its first Seattle-area location Thursday.

The new facility in Renton will support Boeing employees who now get their vision benefits through its sister company Davis Vision.

"This is an exciting time for our company as we build on our existing alliance with the world’s largest aerospace company,” Jim Eisen, president and CEO, said in a statement. “We are proud to expand into the Seattle marketplace and provide Boeing employees, as well as the general public, with easily accessible eye care minutes from Boeing’s Renton campus."

In August, Davis Vision, one of the nation's largest managed vision care providers, inked a deal to provide vision insurance benefits for Boeing (NYSE: BA). Starting Jan. 1, eligible Boeing employees, retirees and their dependents were put on a vision plan through Davis Vision benefits, which includes eye exams and eyewear available through retail partnerships - such as Visionworks.

The Renton Visionworks is the fourth location in Washington and will serve the greater Seattle area – it is not specifically for Boeing. The new Visionworks location is at 921 N. 10th St., which is less than a mile from Boeing's Renton plant.

The Renton factory, where Boeing assembles its 737 jets, covers 1.1 million square feet. The 737 program rolls out 42 airplanes a month and is expected to increase the rate to 47 a month in 2017 and 57 in 2019. In 2012, the city of Renton said it had almost 13,500 Boeing employees in the city, and forecasted 2016 would have almost 15,000.

In total, Visionworks has 700 retail stores in 42 states and Washington D.C. The retailer offers eyeglasses in brands such as Chelsea Morgan, Salsa, Guess, Kate Spade, Nike, Harley Davidson and Hello Kitty to name a few.
